An overview of Mission East Activities
|
|
|
Today, Mission East is active in six countries in Eastern Europe and Asia.
We operate in Afghanistan, Armenia and Tajikistan where we have field offices. In Bulgaria, Nepal and Romania we co-operate with local partner NGOs.
Mission East runs programmes falling within the spectrum of both relief and development, and makes every effort to ensure a natural link between these two distinct concepts of assistance.
Emergency relief operations are undertaken in accordance with considerations of need, our ability (capacity) to respond to that need, actions by other organisations or governments, and how such operations fit with our organisational mandate.
Development assistance is also offered only as a planned result of assessing the input that we have to offer to a particular situation, and with maximised local participation in the aims of relevance and sustainability. Mission East believes that any material and technical development must be rooted in the community and the development of the entire human being, and supported by co-operation at all levels of society and government.

Afghanistan Since autumn 2002, Mission East has been working with communities in north-eastern Afghanistan to meet emergency needs and develop infrastructure to allow for sustainable improvement to livelihoods. Among Mission East’s activities are:
* Construction of roads from rural communities to allow access to markets, schools and health care.
* Provision of sustainable water systems to allow rural villages access to clean drinking water.
* Hygiene education to help people protect themselves from disease.
* Construction of irrigation canals to benefit small-scale rural farmers.
* Establishment of kitchen gardens in many households and ongoing training to improve nutrition and self-sufficiency. Read more about Mission East in Afghanistan |

Bulgaria In Bulgaria, more than a decade after the fall of Communism, society’s most vulnerable members remain in extreme need of assistance. Through our partner organisation we are helping to establish a social centre which will assist the poor in Sofia, the capital. When completed the social centre will aim to provide:
* A soup kitchen for street children and elderly.
* An elderly day care centre.
* Medical services for those otherwise unable to afford healthcare.
* Facilities for training and for services giving advice and information. |
|
Nepal Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world. As well as extreme poverty, ongoing internal conflict has also brought instability and suffering to a largely rural population. In order to assist those most in need, Mission East is co-operating with NASSO (Nepal Avinash Social Service Organisation). Activities include:
* Supporting an orphanage.
* Support to keep children of poor families in school.
* Income generation projects to help households earn enough to meet their basic needs. |
|
Romania In Romania almost one third of the population lives below the poverty line and the poor remain extremely vulnerable and without access to some basic services. To tackle a range of social problems Mission East co-operates with Romanian NGO Solia Sperantei (Messenger of Hope). The local organisation is providing:
* Free medicine and medical care.
* Schoolbooks and toys.
* Assistance in finding help for social problems (access to legal and health advice, help seeking employment etc). |
|
Tajikistan The southern part of Tajikistan is one of the poorest areas of the former Soviet Union. Mission East continues to offer assistance to communities who are trying to leave behind the legacy of civil war and drought. Activities include:
* Development of Community Organisations to manage local projects and needs
* Agricultural inputs and training to help households grow their own food.
* Provision of clean water supply.
* Hygiene education and improvement of sanitation. Read more |
