Background: Massive mudflows following torrential rains from April through the end of May 2007 devastated 2 villages in Yori Jamoat, Penjikent District. More than 14000 people were affected. Mission East is already active in this area, carrying out Disaster Risk Reduction activities with communities at risk from natural hazard such as earthquake. This project will be coordinated with other programmes already operating in the area and will offer short term assistance to reconstruction as well as supporting a longterm increase in capacity of local communities to prepare for disaster.
Action: The project will support reconstruction and repair of homes for 282 households in 2 villages. Training will be given to masons and homeowners to support improved construction practices. Community Mitigation and Preparedness Teams will be trained, and Village Disaster Management plans drawn up. Local initiatives (mitigation projects) to reduce the impact of mudflow will be supported. |
