Spring 08 "We had no idea, why our children were dying," explains 30-year-old Quarban Gul in this issue of the magazine. Like in so many other poor villages in Afghanistan, the 320 villagers in her village used dirty water for cooking and drinking. Their sanitation conditions were very poor and children and adults were constantly ill. Every year they had to spend a lot of money on treatment. At worst the medicine was wasted. Sons and daughters, mothers and fathers died because nobody had told them about good hygiene.

Autumn 07
Mission East arrived in Tajikistan in 1997 - ten years ago this autumn - as the first Danish aid organisation. What started out as tons of emergency aid has become long-term assistance. Some of the country's poorest are now able to take care of themselves because of new knowledge about things like farming and food preservation. Today, Mission East is the only Danish aid organisation in Tajikistan with our own projects. In this issue you can also read about the Vice Managing Director's visit to Mission East's projects in Afghanistan.

Spring 2007 600 handicapped children are left out of the school system in the poor Gegharkunik region of Armenia. In Armenia where people with handicaps or learning difficulties are wieved as having less potential than others it can be hard to convince parents that their handicapped children need to go to school. Surveys show that at least 700 children in the Gegharkunik region need special education. Despite that fact, the only school in the area for children with learning disabilities only has about 100 students even though it has room for twice as many. In this issue you can read about the Managing Directors son, ten-year-old Philip Wikborg Hartzner, who visits the school with his own classmates.
