| Annual Report 05
In 2005, some of the major stories in the news were the terrible tsunami in South-East Asia and the earthquake in Pakistan. But outside the media spotlight, the hidden crises carried on. We continued to work in some areas of forgotten crisis, as well as in situations that remain in the world’s headlines. We operated in Armenia, Afghanistan, Tajikistan and Iraq, and co-operated with local organisations in Romania, Bulgaria and Nepal. The countries we work in all have in common huge social and economic transitions. Our concern is to help those people who are often the last to feel the benefits of transition. 2005 demonstrated that however much progress is made in the field of development, new disasters will continue to come and there will always be a huge need for organisations like Mission East. Summer 05
In Nepal many children do not have the right to a childhood. They grow up without ever getting a chance to go to school or to play. An estimated 2.6 million children are involved in child labour, and so was the boy Pradeep. At the age of four he was doing domestic labour for a family that he did not know.
Pradeep has no memory of his parents. Perhaps they were killed in the ongoing armed conflict between the Maoists and the government, or perhaps they were too poor to feed him, or perhaps they simply sold him to survive. Many Nepalese children are not orphans, but are orphaned because of the desperate poverty that their parents are trapped in.
But Pradeep is lucky. Today, he is living at the Eternity Orphanage Home, which is run by Mission East’s local partner, NASSO. Unlike many Nepalese children at his age Pradeep has enough food to eat, he has access to health care and education and last but not least he is loved by the staff and his friends at the orphanage whom he plays with every day. In this magazine you can read Pradeep’s story.
