Mission East is a Danish international relief and development organisation, which works to help the vulnerable through humanitarian relief aid, development assistance and support to increasing capacity of communities to organise and assist themselves.
Our 'Values in Action are': honesty, integrity, compassion, valuing the individual, respect for all people.
Mission East works in response to community needs, primarily in the areas of public health, livelihoods improvement and food security. Mission East operates in Armenia, Afghanistan and Tajikistan and co-operates with local partners in Bulgaria, Nepal and Romania. |
| From emergency aid to independence |
Mission East carries out its work on successive levels:
Emergency aid: Countries in crisis require urgent humanitarian aid, simply to ease suffering and keep people alive. We concentrate on delivering basic food supplies and answering other immediate needs.
Development: Emergency aid alone is not enough to regenerate communities. Alongside and beyond crisis response, Mission East plans and implements projects designed to bring long-term benefits to the community. These projects may focus on health, sanitation, agriculture, education and social issues.
Self help: Mission East seeks to transfer skills and to empower local communities: to build their capacity to help themselves, and put the future back in their own hands.

| How it all started |
Mission East was founded in 1991 by René Hartzner and his son, medical doctor Kim Hartzner. René had travelled around Eastern Europe to discover how life was for Christians under Communist rule. The conditions he encountered had such an impact on René that he felt the need to do something.
Kim Hartzer heard his father talk about the experiences in Eastern Europe and also felt convinced that they needed to help the people that were suffering. So in 1991 René and Kim started up an organisation with the aim to aid Eastern Europe.
Mission East has grown rapidly in a short space of time and its interventions have spread far beyond its original Eastern European focus. In 2007 Mission East helped more than 250,000 people in need.
