The people of Nepal continue to struggle not only with poverty, but with ongoing political instability. Mission East maintains its assistance to some of the most vulnerable of Nepal in partnership with local organisations.

NASSO (Nepali Avinash Social Services Organisation) is based in the Rupandehi district (south-west Nepal). With a strong emphasis on helping people to help themselves, many of NASSO's activities involve supporting people to develop their own livelihoods. This involves assistance to establish small business, for example a blacksmith trade, or via animal lending schemes. Micro loans given in a targeted way to identified persons in familiar communities are normally repaid in full, and have huge impact on the recipients, who would otherwise have no reasonable means of credit. NASSO's other main focus is helping children especially via the Eternity Orphan Home where children with no family to care for them get a safe and happy start in life.

KIRDARC (Karnali Integrated Rural Development and Research Center) is based in Jumla in northern Nepal and works to support poverty reduction and human rights for the people of the Karnali zone. The Karnali zone is remote, set in the North-western mountainous bordering on China, and among the least developed of Nepal. For historic reasons the zone has been marginalised and of late has been severely affected by conflict between Maoists and the government, leaving lives and infrastructure badly damaged.

In its work with the people of Karnali, KIRDARC uses participatory approaches, and promotes rural communities’ ability to take responsibility for their own development. The organisation works in the areas of education, peace promotion, provision of clean water and sanitation, small scale infrastructure such as irrigation systems, rural hydropower, building of schools and health posts while developing the capacity of communities to manage and maintain this infrastructure. Karnali communities rely on subsistence agriculture. Because of the harsh climate and terrain and poor farming knowledge households produce enough food for only six months of the year. To address this problem KIRDARC and Mission East together are working with communities to improve agricultural output through developing rural irrigation systems and teaching improved farming practice. We also work on health improvement through provision of clean water, sanitation and hygiene education.
