Opbygning af modstandsdygtige liv og livsgrundlag i sårbare lokalsamfund i det nordøstlige Afghanistan (Badakhshan og Takhar) - Fase III

Project Status:
Afsluttet

Mål:

Overall Objective
To reduce vulnerability to chronic food insecurity, malnutrition and waterborne disease and to improve and diversify the livelihoods of at-risk remote rural communities in north-eastern Afghanistan

Specific Objectives

  1. To improve access to potable water and adequate sanitation, and knowledge and practices of health and hygiene;
  2. To improve quality and quantity of household food production, consumption and dietary diversity;
  3. To strengthen primary and alternative  livelihood activities by improving agricultural infrastructure and providing support to producer groups;
  4. To develop and strengthen community-based disaster preparedness and response mechanisms for better protection of created water supply and community

Baggrund:

The project covers the two provinces of Badakhshan and Takhar, north-eastern Afghanistan. The targeted villages were situated in under-served and remote parts of both districts. In Takhar the project is in the two districts of Chaab and Rustaq.  In Badakhshan, activities were carried out in 35 communities spread over 6 districts in the eastern part of the province - Jurm, Wakhan, Warduj, Baharak, Ishkashim, and Shohada. Particular attention was given to selecting households found to be most vulnerable such as female-headed households, households with family members with disability or a large number of dependents, landless farmers, and other single-income households.

Aktiviteter:

The programme takes the strategic approach of maximizing the sustainability and impact of project activities by creating ownership through the involvement of key stakeholders (both government and community) in the identification and implementation of projects with the eventual aim of full handover through the following steps: a) by developing and strengthening participatory systems for post-project management; b) by building the capacity of community-based groups to take ownership and responsibility for continuing project activities (Water User Committees or WUCs, Community Development Councils or CDCs, SHGs, producer groups); c) by improving community-level disaster preparedness, response and mitigation capacities to better protect created WASH and community infrastructure; d) by ensuring linkages of community groups with relevant local government departments that may provide future training and support and e) by facilitating market linkages between all players in the market chain, from producer to consumer, where possible. The capacity built within individual households helps them to ensure continued application of good hygiene and nutrition practices for their long-term health and food security benefits.
