Promote water, sanitation & hygiene and disaster management in at-risk border communities of Afghanistan and Tajikistan


Project Status: 
Running

Aims:

To reduce vulnerability to disease and natural hazards and to improve the living conditions of at-risk remote rural communities in the border regions of Afghanistan and Tajikistan, through the provision of clean drinking water and adequate sanitation facilities, the improvement of local hygiene practices and the implementation of CB-DRR measures.

 
R.1 Water facilities constructed at household and community level provide potable water.
R.2 Latrines constructed at household and community level provide for improved sanitation.
R.3 Inclusive promotion sessions (training) lead to improved knowledge and better practices on health and hygiene.
R.4 Improved structural DRR and disaster preparedness measures at community and government levels
R.5 Using cross-border visits, community-based WASH and DRR management is improved.
R.6 Improved understanding of needs and possibilities for further, cross-border livelihoods interventions.

Background:

Remote rural cross-border areas. No piped drinkable water systems available. Open defecation the norm. Mountainious disaster prone area (avalanches, mud flows, floods).
