Project Status:
Running

Project Aims:

The projects's overall aim : To support the basic needs and psychosocial recovery and stability of people displaced by the conflict in Iraq, contributing towards the achievement of the Humanitarian Response Plan for Iraq.

The operation's specific purpose: To provide timely emergency interventions and ongoing services to support WASH, Shelter/NFI and protection needs of displaced populations in Ninewa, Dohuk and Kirkuk Governorates.

Background:

Over the past two years, over 3.3 million people  have been displaced by the current conflict in Iraq, making it the one of the world’s most rapidly unfolding and largest displacement crises. Mission East has been working since 2014 to assist IDPs (internally displaced people) - families fleeing from violence, leaving behind all their possessions and often experiencing high levels of trauma and hardship.  The situation continues to change and IDPs need assistance with basic household items, shelter, clean water, and protection.

Action:

The project will included distribution of household water storage items, safe drinking water and basic hygiene items, including female hygiene items.  Hygiene awareness sessions will be conducted, and support given for installation / improvement of latrines.  Cash distributions or material support will be given to support specific summer / winter needs of IDPs,  and for shelter improvements.  Child- and Youth-Friendly spaces will run to provide a safe environment for learning, recreation and pyschosocial support for children.
