Project Background:

With a population of 27.5 million people, Nepal is amongst the poorest countries in the world. It is the second poorest country in Asia, and it ranks 138th out of 169 countries in the UN Human Development Index.  Kalikot district of Karnali region, where this project will take place, is one of the poorest areas in Nepal. Due to its remoteness and poverty levels, people are forced to migrate in search of food and work. The fight against poverty in remote mountainous regions of Nepal is hampered by the marginalization of women. Women have low social status and are subject to harmful traditional practices and discrimination. There is a lack of awareness of women’s rights, and women’s opportunities to participate in income generation are limited.  The theme for the Danish Television campaign 'Fighting Poverty' fits well with Mission East's goal of helping reduce poverty in this remote region.

Project Aims:

Project Aims:

The overall aim of the project is to empower most vulnerable women in the remote and isolated area of Kalikot in Nepal to fight poverty through education and livelihood improvement.

The specific objectives are:

  1. Increased women’s influence at family and societal levels through functional literacy, training on their rights, those of their children (particularly girls) and community dialogue.
  2. By the end of the project, women’s income increased through the provision of vocational training and basic entrepreneurship classes, access to resources, and better market linkages.

Project Actions:

Project partners Mission East and KIRDARC will use their experience and expertise to support empowerment of women in isolated areas to fight poverty through education and livelihoods improvement. The formation of women’s groups, and awareness raising with stakeholders including men and adolescents will bring better community understanding of inclusion and gender based issues and reduced marginalisation. Women will be able advocate to local government for benefit from development efforts at the local level, with an emphasis on quality education for girls as a means of fighting long-term poverty. Women will be able to use knowledge and skills acquired through the project to engage in income generation activities, improving both the wellbeing of their families and the status of women.
