Mål:

To reduce vulnerability and build resilience in rural communities suffering from protracted social, economic and environmental instability.

Baggrund:

Mission East is committed to meeting basic needs and to protecting and promoting the livelihoods of rural communities in remote, isolated, and under-served areas of north-eastern Afghanistan. Afghan rural livelihoods  are endemically vulnerable to shocks from recurring natural disasters and the long prevailing climate of instability, which has led to weakened community capacities to withstand, respond to and recover from these shocks. Mission East finds it imperative to have the capacity, both to provide immediate humanitarian relief in the event of disasters as well as the capacity to promote early recovery and long-term sustainable development.  Therefore Mission East’s strategy in Afghanistan prioritizes the development of its capacity in two key strategic directions:

  1. Emergency Response. To respond rapidly and effectively to upcoming emergency needs and ease the suffering of affected populations, and;
  2. Rural Community Development. To reduce vulnerability, both chronic and transient, to strengthen local resilience and to promote long-term economic and social development.

Aktiviteter:

The Mission East programme in Afghanistan aims to reduce vulnerability and build resilience in rural communities suffering from protracted instability. The programme covers both emergency relief – meeting immediate needs in case of natural disasters and conflict - and longer-term early recovery and developmental needs. The holistic, integrated approach adopted covers a variety of resilience-building measures taken over a period of several years in each community, starting with meeting basic needs for water, sanitation and hygiene, basic food security, and disaster risk reduction, and then progressing to secure longer term economic, social and civil society development through livelihood security and natural resource management interventions.
